Description
Torregorda is a military tower in the province of Cadiz, located between Cádiz and San Fernando. The tower was originally built in the early seventeenth century, perhaps on the remains of the primitive towers and hammock of Hercules that was erected in this same spot. It was part of the system of towers that guarded the coast and through which alerts could be quickly transmitted through smoked or bonfires. Torregorda maintained visual contact at least with those of Sancti Petri, Torre Alta and San Sebastián. The battery would be built around the tower in the first half of the 18th century. Its semicircular front directed the artillery toward the open sea and at the same time protected the road between Cadiz and San Fernando that ran alongside it. Later it had to be reformed in the activities related to the arrival of the Napoleonic troops, incorporating the perimeter pit and modifying the front of the land. To prevent it from serving as a reference to the enemy during the war with the US, the tower was demolished to the massive basement in 1898, and on this the current one would be built in 1932. The battery, in good condition although with the partially occupied pit, the parapet and the wall of the moat have been lost from the northern flank.
