Description
The arc of the Rose is the former western gate embedded in the walls of the medieval Cadiz. Currently it is located next to the Cathedral of Cadiz, in Piazza Pio XII.
This wall was built in the thirteenth century during the reign of Alfonso X the Wise. There are two theories about the origin of the name: one states that is named in honor of a eponymous Marian devotion which had a nearby chapel; the other, called after Captain Gaspar de la Rosa, who lived in the city in the eighteenth century.
