The first mention of the city dates back to the year 1087, under the name sancto Iuliano de Ferrol, where Ferrol is probably the local evolution of the genitive form of the Latin anthroponym Ferreolus; as such, Ferrol was probably, in origin, the estate of one Ferreolus. The name Ferrol was adopted in 1982 but is documented at least by the fifteenth century.
